Isaiah 46:4. Even to your old age and grey hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
There’s a bloke and his missus in Johannesburg, who have served in a church there faithfully for 427 years, at least. This bloke, we’ll call him Leigh, because we have to call him something, was 70 just as I was 70 (good vintage) and his tenure with that church came to an end. Leigh and his wife (we’ll call her Irene) didn’t have any plans set up way back, they knew that when the time came God would guide them. But, you know, South Africa is a huge and rapidly developing country and there are tensions and problems and you’d think they would be worried. But they knew. They knew God and they knew His love. They didn’t want to leave ministry, they will never leave it – Christ is knitted into their bones. How could they ever retire?
Today I had an email from Irene, Leigh is going to Pastor another church. I was concerned… would they have to move house… would they be OK (my faith falters, I know). Then Irene told me that the new church is 4.3 km. from their home in a northerly direction, while their old church was 4.3km. away in the westerly direction. Irene added ‘Now, if that isn’t guidance!’
I am so proud of God. Like Paul I’m going to boast of Him.
And here’s a little glimpse of joy and fun, in a small Baptist church in Wales. The lady is a newcomer, and the gentleman is our lovely superannuated Californian ex-hippy. We’re a mixed lot! And God loves us. I’m boasting again.
