I’m not blogging tonight

But something has hit me with such force and given my tired spirits a lift… you know that lump of Job (chapter 26) that I posted a few days ago?

“God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. He created the horizon when he separated the waters: he set the boundary between day and night. The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”

The NIV version ends that with : And these are but the outer fringe of his works;
 how faint the whisper we hear of him!  Who then can understand the thunder of his power?’

I like the idea of our Universe being ‘the fringe’ of His works.

Well, yesterday reading it aloud to a couple of friends what struck me was that penultimate beat… “These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power.” and that made me think of the last sentence in John’s gospel. “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.”

And that made me look at the first Chapter of John, possibly the most beautiful and comprehension poetic and  thrilling account of truth that has ever been written (I like it… did you get that? ). I can’t read it without being drawn into excitement and anticipation and wonder:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcomeit.There was a man sent from God whose name was John.  He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.  He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.  Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God –  children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

If that doesn’t set your heart racing, take yourself down to A&E and get them to check if life is extinct.

The Universe is just the beginning of all God does, NOT ‘DID’…. does. Present tense. He’s still at work, all around us. We were reminded of that tonight. He’s here now, working His miracle of forgiveness and life. And we, and all we know, are just a whisper of His power, and the account we have of His life on Earth could not be contained in all the books on this earth, and without Him  nothing was made that has been made.

That’s it. I’m ready for bed now, night night all. God bless.
